ANTHEM FOR THE CAUSE
Music lives forever and can be an emotional, compelling force. There have been many “cause” songs that helped create activism and propel legislation to become law.
• Stevie Wonder wrote “Happy Birthday” in 1979 to help successfully secure the Martin Luther King holiday;
• “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” was written in 1984 by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise money in reaction to television reports of the 1983–85 famine in Ethiopia;
• Stevie Wonder also wrote “It’s Wrong” in 1985 to bring attention to apartheid in South Africa and help end it;
• Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson wrote “We Are The World” in 1985 to help raise money for humanitarian aid in Africa and the US.
I felt a song was my best form of expression to help change the conversation and bring attention to the real danger: the ammunition. I started writing “Let Go of Gun Control (Change The Way That The Ammo Is Sold)” directly in response to the October 1, 2017 Las Vegas, NV mass shooting and, ironically, the song and video were finalized after the November 5, 2017 Sutherland Springs. TX mass shooting.
